How to resize a photo to 200×230 pixels

200 by 230 pixels is the photo size many government and university portals ask for. This guide shows you how to resize any photo to exactly that size without guessing.

A photo's size in pixels is separate from its size in kilobytes. A photo can be 200 by 230 pixels and still be 200 KB, or it can be 2000 by 2300 pixels and only 40 KB. Portals check both numbers, so resizing is only half the job — but it is the half that most people get wrong, because they resize by eye and hope it is close enough.

The Photo Resizer on SubmitSure removes the guessing. You upload your photo, type 200 for the width and 230 for the height, and the tool produces a new image of exactly those dimensions. It shows you the new size before you download, so you can confirm the numbers instead of trusting them.

Before you resize, crop the photo so the important part fills the frame. A passport-style photo should show your head and shoulders, centred, with a little space above your head. If you resize a wide group photo down to 200 by 230, your face becomes a few pixels wide and unrecognisable. Crop first, then resize — the order matters.

Think about the shape, too. A 200 by 230 image is slightly taller than it is wide. If your original is a wide landscape photo, squeezing it into a tall shape will stretch faces. Cropping to a similar tall shape first keeps faces looking natural. The resizer keeps the proportions you give it, so the crop you do beforehand is what decides how natural the result looks.

After resizing, check the file size in KB as well. A 200 by 230 JPG is usually between 10 and 60 KB, depending on how detailed the photo is. If the portal wants 20 to 50 KB and your resized photo is 70 KB, use the Image Compressor with a target of 40 KB. If it is under 20 KB, the photo may be too compressed — start from a sharper original rather than enlarging the small one.

Always download the resized file and open it before uploading it to the portal. Check that your face is clear, the photo is the right way up, and the file is a JPG if the portal asks for JPG. A quick look now saves a rejection later, and it costs nothing.

Do it in 3 steps

  1. Crop first — Crop the photo so your head and shoulders fill the frame, in a tall shape like the final photo.
  2. Resize it — Open the Photo Resizer, set width 200 and height 230, and download the result as JPG.
  3. Check the KB size — If the portal also has a KB limit, compress to a target inside it and run the File Checker to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Why 200×230?

It is the size many South Asian government and university portals use for passport photos. Your portal may use a different size — always check its own rules and enter those numbers instead.

Will resizing make my photo blurry?

Shrinking a large, sharp photo to 200×230 keeps it sharp. Enlarging a small photo makes it blurry, so always start from the largest, sharpest original you have.

What format should the result be?

Usually JPG. If your portal says JPG, download as JPG. If it accepts PNG, either works, but JPG is smaller for photos.

Can I resize on my phone?

Yes. The Photo Resizer works in a phone browser. Upload the photo from your gallery, type 200 and 230, and download the result.
