How to compress an image to an exact KB target

Sometimes a portal does not just want a small image — it wants an exact size, like 50 KB, or a size inside a range, like 20 to 50 KB. Here is how to hit that target.

Most people compress images by guessing: they lower the quality slider, save the file, check the size, and repeat. That works, but it is slow, and it is easy to overshoot and end up with a file that is much smaller — and much blurrier — than it needed to be. A better way is to set the exact target first and let the tool work towards it.

The Image Compressor on SubmitSure does exactly that. You upload your image, type the target size in KB — say 50 — and the tool adjusts the quality and, if needed, the dimensions, until the file lands as close to 50 KB as possible. It shows you the size before and after, so you can see what changed. If the exact target cannot be reached, it tells you honestly and shows the closest size it could manage, instead of pretending it succeeded.

Start with the best original you have. A sharp, well-lit photo compresses well, because smooth areas like sky and walls compress to very little. A noisy photo — one taken in low light, or full of fine detail like grass and hair — compresses badly, because every pixel is different from its neighbours. That is why the same 50 KB target can look great on one photo and poor on another.

Choose the right format before you compress. JPG is best for photographs, because it is designed for them. PNG is best for screenshots, logos and text, because it keeps sharp edges clean — but a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG. If the portal accepts JPG, convert the photo to JPG first and you may already be most of the way to your target.

If the image is still too large at a reasonable quality, make it smaller in pixels as well. A 2000 by 2000 pixel photo contains far more detail than any form needs, and shrinking it to the size the portal actually displays can cut the file size by more than half without any visible loss. Resize first, then compress — doing it the other way round wastes quality.

Finally, look at the result before you use it. Open the downloaded image and zoom in. Faces and text should still be readable. If the image looks blocky or the colours have gone patchy, the target was too low for that photo — either use a slightly larger target, or start from a cleaner original. Never upload a file you have not looked at.

Do it in 3 steps

  1. Upload and set the target — Open the Image Compressor, upload your image, and type the exact KB target, for example 50.
  2. Download the result — Check the before and after sizes. If the tool says it reached the target, download the file.
  3. Check it — If the portal has other rules, run the downloaded file through the File Checker to confirm size, format and dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What does “exact KB target” mean?

It means you type the size you want, like 50 KB, and the tool tries to produce a file of that size, usually within about 5 percent. If it cannot reach it, it shows the closest size it managed.

Why is my compressed image blurry?

The target was probably too low for that photo, or the photo was noisy to begin with. Try a slightly larger target, or start from a sharper original.

JPG or PNG — which should I choose?

JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots, logos and text. If the portal says JPG, use JPG.

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression happens inside your browser. The image never leaves your device.
